When we think of traveling Arizona , the majesty of the Grand Canyon comes to mind, but Arizona has some other great canyons you can visit and some are hidden finds. Have a Look at Arizona’s Other Spectacular Canyons.
Antelope Canyon
Antelope Canyon, located outside of Page is at once one of the most breathtaking and tranquil places on earth. Gently carved from the Navajo sandstone over the course of countless millenniums, the slot canyons are majestic and narrow passages, just enough space for a small group to walk the sandy floor and for the occasional shafts of sunlight to shine down from above.
It is really two separate canyons: Upper and Lower Antelope. Each contains the hidden 'slots' carved from the swirling sandstone, and both drain from the south into Lake Powell (once the Colorado River). Though dry most of the year, Antelope Canyon runs, and sometimes floods, with water after rains. It is the water, slowly wearing away the sandstone grain by grain, that has formed the beautiful and graceful curves in the rock. The wind has also played a role in sculpting this fantastic canyon.
To access Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon, you must have an authorized guide.
Canyon X
As the world’s most photographed slot canyon, Antelope Canyon tends to get a little overcrowded. Fortunately, there is an alternative: Canyon X, a slightly deeper, more remote and far less visited canyon than Antelope, lies just a few miles away.
Because visits to Canyon X are limited to four people at a time (six if they're in the same group), photographers and hikers can enjoy the eerie beauty of a top-notch slot canyon in near isolation.
Canyon X lies within the Navajo Reservation and is accessible only through Overland Canyon Tours in Page. The company offers a six-hour photographers tour, shorter treks for hikers and customized tours – all of which are only available through advanced reservations. Walnut Canyon National Monument
In the densely-wooded country southeast of Flagstaff, the small seasonal stream Walnut Creek has carved a 600-foot deep canyon into the local Kaibab limestone as it flows east, eventually joining the Little Colorado River en route to the Grand Canyon. The exposed rocks in the canyon walls occur in various layers, of slightly differing hardness, some of which have eroded more rapidly forming shallow caves. During the 12th to 13th centuries, these caves were used by the local Sinagua Indians who constructed many cave-dwellings along the steep well-protected ledges, high above the canyon floor.
Walnut Canyon was proclaimed a national monument in 1915.
While there, hike one of two trails or stop and take in a program given by park rangers. Allow at least 2 hours to see the museum and ruins.
Ramsey Canyon
Ramsey Canyon, located within the Upper San Pedro River Basin in southeastern Arizona, is renowned for its outstanding scenic beauty and the diversity of its plant and animal life. This diversity—including such highlights as the occurrence of up to 14 species of hummingbirds—is the result of a unique interplay of geology, biogeography, topography, and climate.
Southeastern Arizona is an ecological crossroads, where the Sierra Madre of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts all come together. The abrupt rise of mountains like the Huachucas from the surrounding arid grasslands creates “sky islands” harboring rare species and communities of plants and animals. This combination of factors gives Ramsey Canyon Preserve its tremendous variety of plant and animal life, including such southwestern specialties as the lemon lily, ridge-nosed rattlesnake, lesser long-nosed bat, elegant trogon, and berylline and white-eared hummingbirds.
A Folklore Preserve
Nestled in Ramsey Canyon is the Arizona Folklore Preserve. Founded by Official State Balladeer Dolan Ellis and in partnership with the University of Arizona South, the Arizona Folklore Preserve is a place where Arizona's songs, legends, poetry, and myths are collected, presented for audiences of today, and preserved for the enrichment of future generations.
Canyon de Chelly National Monument
Reflecting one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America, the cultural resources of Canyon de Chelly include distinctive architecture, artifacts, and rock imagery while exhibiting remarkable preservation integrity that provides outstanding opportunities for study and contemplation. Canyon de Chelly also sustains a living community of Navajo people, who are connected to a landscape of great historical and spiritual significance. Canyon de Chelly is unique among National Park service units, as it is comprised entirely of Navajo Tribal Trust Land that remains home to the canyon community.
Horse-back riding, hiking, jeep tours and four-wheel drive tours are all available at Canyon de Chelly as well as ranger-conducted activities.
Aravaipa Canyon
As a prime example of the Southwest's desert country, narrow and twisting Aravaipa Canyon has few if any equals. Located 50 miles northeast of Tucson , It is a stretch of incredible scenic wonder, filled with biological treasures that have attracted enough human traffic to make overuse a problem since the 1960s. Aravaipa Creek, shaded by cottonwoods, has cut a trough up to 1,000 feet deep in the Galiuro Mountains, and the canyon walls are wondrously carved and painted in subtle sandy colors. The creek runs year-round from springs, seeps, and tributary streams, and along the water grows one of the lushest riparian habitats in southern Arizona.
The main canyon's length is about 11 miles, and the Wilderness extends well beyond it to include surrounding tablelands and nine side canyons. Seven species of native desert trout may be found here, along with desert bighorn sheep, an extensive variety of large and small mammals and reptiles, and at least 238 species of birds.
A “must do” in Aravaipa Canyon is the Bed & Breakfast, Across the Creek at Aravaipa. Because the inn is 3 miles up a gravel road and then across a stream (high-clearance vehicles recommended), it's a long way to a restaurant. Consequently, innkeeper Carol Steele provides all meals. Guests entertain themselves hiking in the Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness, bird-watching and cooling off in the creek. The casitas are eclectically decorated with a mix of folk art and rustic Mexican furnishings and have tile floors, stone-walled showers, and shady verandas.

Buckskin Gulch , Paria Canyon - Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness(south border of Escalante National Monumentnear Page, Arizona)
Buckskin Gulch is perhaps the longest slot canyon in the world. It's 100 to 200 feet deep and 30 to 50 feet wide for more than 12 miles. It is a bit of a trek to get out there, but definitely worth it.
From Page, Arizona, travel west on Highway 89 until you reach the Paria ranger station. You can stop here to obtain more information about the area including a map. To reach the Wire Pass trailhead, continue west on 89 to an unmarked, gravel road on the left (south) at 0.8 miles past mile marker 25.
You'll see the road just after Highway 89 crests the top of a hill. The unmarked road is known as House Rock Valley Road. It's about 34 miles from Page to the turnoff. Don't be fooled by the weedy, overgrown vehicle tracks nearer the top of the hill, go a little further. As you crest the hill, you'll see Highway 89 curve off to the right ahead of you. House Rock Valley Road heads south of 89 just as you would begin rounding the turn.
House Rock Valley Road can be a bumpy ride in a passenger vehicle and may require a 4-wheel drive when wet or after storm runoff has washed out sections of the road. It's advisable to check road conditions at the Paria ranger station and confirm your understanding of the directions.
After turning south from 89, stay left at mile 2.5 where the right fork goes to Five Mile Mountain. At mile 4.4 you'll pass through a wash. Follow the road passed the turnoff to the Buckskin Gulch trailhead about a quarter mile after the wash.
You'll eventually reach the Wire Pass trailhead 8.4 miles south of 89. The Wire Pass trailhead is the shortest and most popular route to reach Buckskin Gulch. Wire Pass is also an interesting portion of the hike that you'd miss taking other trailheads.
It's about a 3.4 mile round trip from the trailhead through Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. It's up to you how much distance you'd like to add hiking Buckskin Gulch from here. Buckskin Gulch is 12.5 miles long eventually reaching the Paria river.
The hike through Wire Pass requires navigation of two obstacles. In October of 2001, a ladder was put in place to assist hikers over these challenges. If you need the ladder to get down the 2nd obstacle, you should keep in mind that anyone going the opposite direction can move it to help them up the first one. But, it might not be there when you get back. As a result, you should be confident that you can climb the 2nd obstacle without the ladder.
Definitely check the weather before you go and don't hike this area if there is rain in the forecast. The water can get very deep and fast flowing.

A Hike Through These 7 Slot Canyons In Arizona Will Feel Like You’re Discovering A New World
Port of palm beach map. Arizona is the land of canyons so it’s only natural that we think our state has some of the best examples! Today, we’re going to focus on slot canyons, which are narrow, often very deep canyons formed by water rushing through rock. You might have a difficult time spotting these from above, as they usually only have an upper opening of several inches but they can be found in most areas of the state.
Keep in mind that due to the danger of flash floods, visiting these slot canyons requires a permit, an awareness of the weather, and often an experienced tour guide. We will make a note if a tour guide is required for each of these places.
1. Antelope Canyon, Page Moyan Brenn/Flickr Starting with arguably the most popular slot canyon, Antelope Canyon is actually divided into two: Upper and Lower. Both areas feature the gorgeous curvy walls that beckon visitors from all over the world but you’ll find the tourist traffic significantly less in Lower Antelope Canyon. Canyon X, Page Tracey Harrison-Hill/Flickr Located a relatively short distance from Antelope Canyon, this one is a bit smaller and visited far less often than Antelope Canyon, making a visit here even more special. You’ll love getting what feels like a personalized tour of the slot canyon, as well as watching the light filter through the top opening and changing throughout the day. Paria Canyon, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument Len Hardy/Flickr Tall, remote, and quiet. What more could you ask for in a hiking expedition? Paria Canyon follows the Paria River from the Colorado River. The beginning of the canyon is pretty wide but it progressively becomes narrower as it reaches Buckskin Gulch at the Arizona-Utah border. Trail information: Link 5. Pumphouse Wash, Oak Creek Alan English CPA/Flickr Be prepared to use climbing equipment to make it into the canyon’s depths here. You’ll find cliffs, pools, and very narrow areas for hiking. Aside from that, it is one pretty area that will shake up your typical Sedona hike. Trail information: Link 6. Secret Canyon Chris Colhoun/Flickr There’s another canyon by the same name in the Sedona area but that’s not the one we’re talking about today. This Secret Canyon exists in the same general area as Antelope Canyon and Canyon X but, per its name, it sees fewer visitors and is gorgeous! You’ll see some similar views as you would at Antelope Canyon, but you’ll know that you’re one of few who’ve explored this place. Trail information: Access to the canyon is restricted to guided tours only through Slot Canyon Hummer Adventures . 7. Water Holes Canyon, Page Jeff Few/Flickr In case you haven’t noticed, this area of Arizona is perfect for finding slot canyons! This one is also less popular than Antelope Canyon but also longer so it is definitely worth the effort to find. Trail information: Access to the canyon is located on the Navajo Nation and will require a permit prior to access. This information can be found through Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation .Those places are absolutely gorgeous and hopefully you get a chance to visit a few of them.
